Healthier mindset during remote work

5 Tips for a Healthier Mindset when Working from Home

Posted by Valka Yoga on

Though remote work can offer flexibility, professionals in high-stress careers like telemedicine are struggling to separate their work responsibilities and personal lives. A study published by the University of Otago revealed that about 35% of remote workers find it difficult to switch off from work. Now that work has become a part of our homes, it's become even more difficult to stop working and to start unwinding.

Having a lack of work-life balance can be detrimental to your health, especially if you already have a high-stress job. To develop a healthier mindset during your remote work experience, here are a few tips that you can follow:

Practise self-care on a regular basis

Self-care may be the last thing on your mind when you’ve got multiple consultations and meetings to consider. However, our article on the ‘5 Ways to Nurture Your Mental Health’ shows that you can practice proper self-care by doing breathing exercises. The 4-4 breathing method instructs you to dedicate four seconds to each step as you inhale, hold, exhale, and hold your breath. Though it may seem simple, these breathing exercises can soothe your senses and calm your nervous system any time you need a quick breather.

Establish boundaries between work and home

A separate working space

It can be difficult to view your home as a place of comfort now that you’re beating deadlines and holding meetings in your personal space. However, a review published by BMC Public Health recommends that you establish a healthier mindset by setting clear working hours. It's impossible to relax when you're on call 24/7, so being clear about your working hours with your employers or your clients is crucial. This way, you have enough time for both your work and recreational activities.

Create a comfortable workspace

Work interruptions can increase your stress levels, especially if you’re presenting in a conference or conducting telehealth consultations. As such, dedicated telehealth company Wheel recommends a workplace setup in a private or quiet space, so that you can focus on your consultations or meetings. Video conferences can also last for hours, so you should make yourself comfortable by using a quality desk and adjustable office chair. By creating a distinct workspace, you can establish a physical boundary in your home and lessen any distractions.

Follow a daily routine for work

You can also establish boundaries around your work and personal life by following a regular routine. Hal Elrod, author of The Miracle Morning, explains that morning routines can keep you focused, productive, and successful at work. These routines are similar to setting an intention for your day, and can encourage you to do simple self-care activities, like making yourself a cup of coffee, before you dive into your busy schedule.

Find ways to incorporate exercise into your routine

Speaking of routines, you can cap off a busy day by doing a quick exercise session. Our article on ‘Yoga for Busy People’ explains that 20-30 minute yoga sessions can counteract the effects of prolonged sitting, and also get you in a more relaxed state. Since remote workers often experience body pain, you can also take the time to do poses that can alleviate specific pain points. Through this simple self-care practice, you can undo the physical effects of remote work and also switch your mindset off from work.

Despite a high-stress career, there are tons of activities that can help you develop a healthier mindset during remote work. Through these five simple self-care tips, you'll be able to set better boundaries for yourself and enjoy the best of your work and your personal time.
